Christmas BellsHere we are again on the brink of Christmas and a New Year! We would like to advise everyone of our Christmas New Year hours of business, which are as follows:

  • Sunday December 23: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Monday December 24: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Tuesday December 25: Closed
  • Wednesday December 26: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Thursday December 27: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Friday December 28: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Saturday December 29: 11 am – 3 pm
  • Sunday December 30: Closed until Friday January 04, 2013
  • Friday January 04, 2013 – we resume our regular shop hours.

We would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Temporary Sunday Hours

Gandharva Loka in Christchurch is normally closed on Sundays but we will be open on the following Sundays from 12 noon until 3 pm: July 29, August 5 and 12.

August Closure Dates

Gandharva Loka in Christchurch will be closed from Thursday August 16 and will reopen on Friday August 31.

Happy New Year!We are very happy to be open again at our new location on St Asaph Street – it is delightful to be nestled in with The Lotus-Heart vegetarian restaurant, tea house and health food store, and The Gift Shop. Thanks so much to our friends and customers who have called us or come by over the past three weeks to wish us well – your kindness and good wishes have been most encouraging.

Just a short note to let everyone know our hours over the New Years break. Gandharva Loka Christchurch will be closed from Thursday 29th December until January 2nd. We will be reopening on the 3rd of January and will then continue with our regular hours.

Prasasta and I would like to wish everyone a peaceful, happy and safe New Year and we look forward to serving your musical needs at Gandharva Loka in the new year.

Gandharva Loka Christchurch to re-open on December 6!

We are delighted to announce that Gandharva Loka in Christchurch will be re-opening at 11am on Tuesday the 6th of December!

Our new location is:
363 St Asaph Street,
(Between Fitzgerald Ave and Barbadoes St
Christchurch.

We have a lovely space that is accessed from the St Asaph Street entrance of The Lotus-Heart restaurant, tea house and health food store – a new location for the popular vegetarian restaurant that is also home to The Gift Shop. At present a new facade is being installed so the building is shrouded in scaffolding. But prepare to be amazed when you step inside – the interior is enchanting!

We now have in stock the best range of instruments we have ever had and we are expecting that more instruments will be arriving in the next few days.

Our hours are:
Tuesday to Saturday, 11am-3pm.
Friday evening 5pm-8pm.
We are happy to accommodate customers outside these hours by appointment if our regular store hours do not suit.

Gandharva Loka opens in Vancouver!

We are very happy to announce that a brand new Gandharva Loka store has opened in Vancouver, Canada! Located in the heart of Vancouver on Granville Island, a bustling market place that is home to numerous artisans, performers and unique stores, Gandharva Loka Vancouver is the first Gandharva Loka store in North America and will offer a huge range of world music instruments. Store location and hours can be found here.

We wish our new sister enterprise well and we are sure that the Vancouver team look forward to serving their customers as the northern spring becomes summer on Granville Island…

Gandharva Loka closed: 6.3 earthquake hits Christchurch!

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Christchurch has been hit by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake this afternoon (Tuesday February 22, 2011) just before 1 pm – a shallow and close quake that has devastated an already battered city. This time many lives have been lost. Our heart’s sympathy and oneness goes out to our fellow Cantabrians. This is a trying time for everyone.

Gandharva Loka’s managers, Vajin and Prasasta Armstrong, are both safe and well. We will not be trading for some time – certainly not from the current store which is still standing but will have to be demolished. It is all an unknown at the moment but we will be back.

Many thanks to all those who have been enquiring and sending messages of concern, sympathy and support. Canterbury needs your prayers and goodwill at the moment.

From the ruins, newness will emerge.

For anything non-urgent please let us know what you are after and we can contact you once we are up and running again.

While we wait for our insurance claims to be settled and new instruments to arrive, we will take this opportunity to travel and find our music-loving customers a great new range of high quality musical instruments from all over the world. By Christmas we do hope to have a new Gandharva Loka world music store open here in beautiful Christchurch. We will be posting updates on this blog and also through The Gandharva Loka Newsletter which we invite you to subscribe to if you haven’t already done so.

Gandharva Loka Store Hours over Christmas and New Year

Gandharva Loka will have extended opening hours, including this coming Sunday, leading up to Christmas Day. Below are listed our store hours over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Sunday the 19th of December – 11 am to 3 pm.
  • Monday the 20th to Friday the 24th of December – 10 am to 6 pm.
  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day – closed.
  • Monday the 27th to Friday the 31st of December – 10 am to 5 pm.
  • Saturday the 1st to Monday the 3rd of January, 2011 – closed.
  • Tuesday the 4th of January – open and resuming normal shop hours.

Christchurch City Parking

With the earthquake damage to Christchurch, finding a space to park the car has become a real issue for many city visitors. In November the Christchurch City Council voted to allow two hours of free parking in its parking buildings and the Tuam Street car park from Monday 22 November 2010 through to Sunday 30 January 2011. (Thank you Council…!)
